 आर्य चाणक्य म्हणतात,  "सुखस्य मुलं धर्म:। धर्मस्य मुलं अर्थ:। अर्थस्य मुलं राज्यम्। राज्यस्य मुलं इंद्रियजय:। हा श्लोक अतिशय स्वयंस्पष्ट आहे. भारतीय राज्य, समाजाची रचना, अर्थव्यवस्थेचा आधार, आर्थिक उन्नतीबाबत समाजाची धारणा भारतीय विचारात खूप स्पष्ट आहे. वेदकालापासून भारतीय विचार संपत्ती निर्माण यावर भर देतो. भारतीय विचारात गरिबीचे उदात्तीकरण नाही. भारतीय विचारात चार पुरुषार्थ सांगितले आहेत. धर्म, अर्थ, काम आणि मोक्ष. हे पुरुषार्थ सांगतानाही भारतीय विचार 'नाती चरामि' असे बंधनही घालतो. वेदांचा तो अर्थ आम्हासची ठावा म्हणणारे संत तुकाराम म्हणतात,  "जोडोनियां धन उत्तम व्यवहारे। उदास विचारे वेच करी।। या उदास विचारे वेच करी मध्ये आपल्या धनाचा, संपत्तीचा गर्व असू नये. संपत्ती निर्माण, धनसंचय हा कोणाला लुबाडून, फसवून करू नये, हाच विचार आहे.  आर्थिक व्यवस्था आणि त्या अनुषंगाने सामाजिक व्यवस्था हे सातत्याने बदलणारे घटक आहेत. प्राचीन आणि मध्ययुगीन काळात आर्थिक व्यवस्थेतील बदलांची गती संथ होती. या बदलांमागील कारणे नैसर्गिक आणि मानवनिर्मित असत. नैसर्गिक कारणांत अर्थातच वादळ, दुष्क
